Create a Positive Self-Talk Routine with Zack Etter – Univ. of Massachusetts

Watch as Zack Etter discusses creating a positive self-talk routine when communicating with players. He recommends sharing positive information everyday as today’s players are surrounded by negativity. Create an environment that focuses on the positive and as an example, ask a player “what was good today?” and this should elicit a positive response. When teaching or correcting a player, feedback should focus on being immediate, direct, and neutral. Your message will not be effective if you are yelling and swearing at a player. Zack finishes by encouraging training your brain to think more positively and therefore expect positive results, which is the definition of confidence.

Zack Etter, LMHC, LPC, CMPC is a licensed Mental Health Therapist and a Certified Mental Performance Consultant with the Association of Applied Sport Psychology at the University of Massachusetts.
