Saúl López Joins Little League® Team as Mexico Country Director

October 8, 2025

Little League® International is pleased to welcome Saúl López as its Mexico Country Director. In this volunteer role, López will replace former Country Director José “Pepe” Maiz as the primary liaison between the local leagues across Mexico and the Latin America Region Headquarters in Puerto Rico.

As the primary liaison, López will work closely with the Latin America Region team, including Latin America Region Director Carlos R. Pagan, to coordinate national and region tournaments. López will also serve as the Little League representative in all international baseball and softball-related matters in Mexico and implement Little League’s strategic efforts to support participation growth and development in Mexico.

“Little League would like to thank Pepe Maiz for his years of service as the Country Director, and we look forward to Saúl continuing the tradition of strong leadership that will allow the country to maintain programs that focus on supporting not only the thousands of Little Leaguers stepping onto the field, but the many dedicated volunteers, as well,” said Dan Velte, Vice President of Operations. “Saúl’s experience at both the local league and national levels will make him a valuable asset to Little League as the Latin America Region continues to implement the organization’s strategic efforts and grow participation.”

With more than 14 years as a Little League volunteer, López has served in multiple positions. At Guadalupe Linda Vista Little League in Monterrey, Mexico, López stepped up to the plate as the league Vice President for five years (2010-2012, 2015-2016) and as the league President for five years (2013-2014, 2017-2019). Since 2012, López has served as the Legal Coordinator and Rules Advisor of the National Directorate of Little League in Mexico.

When he is not at a baseball diamond, López has worked as a corporate attorney and businessman for more than 25 years. López’s son, Saul Gerardo López Guajardo, inherited his dad’s love for the game, competing at every level of play from three years old until he turned 20, and is now a student at the University of Monterrey, studying law and finance.

Before stepping down from the volunteer position, Maiz spent 16 years leading as Country Director. Maiz played in the 1957 Little League Baseball World Series with his Monterrey Industrial Little League, the first non-U.S. team to win the championship. Since clinching the title, Maiz generously gave back to the program and his community, and for his efforts, he was the first non-U.S. person to be enshrined into the Little League Hall of Excellence, the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a Little League alumnus.
