Unified Cheer is a program at Lincoln Southwest that gives students with different abilities the opportunity to cheer at sporting events. The program continues to provide opportunities for every student to connect as a team and build school spirit. This is the fourth year that Southwest has offered Unified Cheer. This is one of the many Unified activities at school that helps promote inclusivity.
Starting in the fall, Unified Cheer makes several appearances throughout the school year. This includes two football games, two volleyball games and two basketball games. Unified focuses on home games, where the students can perform in front of their peers with the large and loud Southwest crowds.
“My favorite part of Unified Cheer is when we are cheering at the home games,” coach Mrs. Amy Jewell said. “I love getting to see everybody so excited and enthusiastic, participating all as one big group.”
The team meets Friday mornings for practices from 7:50 to 8:10 a.m. “Go Big Green,” is one of the warmups they perform, where the team will all move their arms back and forth.
“Getting to watch everybody get to cheer together is so wonderful,” director Mrs. Brandi Benson said. “The thing that makes Lincoln Southwest unique is that we find ways for all students to get involved. I really enjoy watching everybody cheer on the sidelines, making new friends along the way and celebrating with our team. We all have so much fun together.”
